How blog works, what is it, and why? (Simple guide)

Blog has been around for many years. 

You’ve probably heard of it when you were younger.

That “you can’t make money blogging.”

You’ve probably heard that blogging is dead. 

I hope that after reading this blog, you’ll realize the potential a blog can do for anyone. 

Whether you’re a mom, a dad, or a company, starting a blog can be life-changing and beneficial for any business.

How blog works, and what is it?

Before I get into all the nitty-gritty of how a blog works, let’s find out what a blog is. 

What is a blog

According to Google:

A blog is:


a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

Yes, I love using Google to answer all my questions. Google is a massive library in the “cloud.”

My definition of a blog is providing value for people over the internet. 

But blogging was the social media back in the late ’90s and the early 2000s. 

So the definition has evolved quite a bit. 

Back in the early 2000s, blogging is a form of interaction by many people worldwide using the internet. 

Today, a blog is more of a way to inform and educate people. A blog is not a form of social interaction anymore as social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok took over the blog’s role.

How blog works

Today, how a blog works is mainly to inform and educate readers. You don’t go to someone’s blog and start telling them how their food looks appetizing. 

For example, in this blog, I tell people such as you about what I know. Things like starting a blog and how blogs make money, so you can also be unemployed.

Or in my other blog, how to be healthy. You don’t come here and start interacting with me. 

In saying that, you can use a blog to interact with others by allowing people to comment on an article. 

But most of the time, people who comment are spams who only want to drop links to their website for some link juice. 

You’ll find out when you have a blog of your own that gets a significant number of traffic.

Blog as a diary

Some people still use blogs as a diary, which is what blogging was from 1993 to 2001. 

But as I mentioned, blogging previously as a diary is dead since the birth of social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. 

Don’t let me stop you from using blogging as your private diary, though. It’s a great way to improve your writing, or you just want to get things out of your chest.

I improved my grammar, improved my vocabulary, and learned how to structure sentences so it “flows” better.

How blog works today

Others can also use blogs to talk about their hobbies or passion while helping others. In helping others, a blogger may refer others to products which the blogger will get a commission from qualified sales. 

But that’s not the only way you can make money with blogging. You can also use blogs as a way to bring value to people in return for awareness.

Essentially, blogging has become a business. As blogs become an excellent way to bring profit, companies have joined the blogging game.

Awareness is crucial for businesses. If no one knows about the products they’re selling, how can they make sales?

That’s why companies, sole traders, are happy to pay for ads to get their brand in front of people. 

One of the best methods of getting some awareness is through content marketing (blogging). 

The more you write about topics that are related to your business, the more you are telling people about your products and services. 

In terms of marketing, bogging brings people on top of the funnel, the awareness. 

And you can collect emails, subscriptions or lead them deeper into the funnel by using links.

You collect subscriptions and emails to further push them down to the bottom of the funnel.

I love the AIDA formula as it’s simple and basic as it can get. 

A = Awareness – A person may realize they have a need, and your blogging brought it to them.

I = Interest – That person then has your brand in mind.

D = Decision – The person then decides that your products and services are the answer.

A = Action – Browser turns to a buyer. 


That is how blog works today. 

Twenty years ago, blogging worked differently.

Blogging was primarily to interact with other people, write about their day and the food they ate. 

Nowadays, blogs are treated as a business and marketing tool. Web 2.0 made sure of that.

Social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Youtube took over the blog’s role as a social network.

If you think a blog works in the form of a diary, then you won’t get far in terms of making money. 

However, if you’re not in it for the money, blogging is a great way to start honing your writing skills or a place for you to vent.

It’s fascinating how things change in only a decade. I can’t tell if a blog will work the same way as it is working today. 

Perhaps, Facebook will become the next blogging platform of choice in the future. If Facebook lets you own your articles and allows you to monetize. 

What makes Facebook an attractive blogging platform? 

Well, Facebook’s user base is massive. What if Mark Zuckerberg decides to create a search engine, much like Google, inside Facebook?

If that happens, you don’t need to buy a domain, no more expensive hosting, no need for SEO, and already many people to sell to.

This is happening right now. You can blog on Medium and get plenty of awareness. Saving you money from purchasing a domain and hosting. You don’t have to worry about SEO or marketing because Medium takes care of that for you. All you have to do is produce content.

When it comes to a new blog, your website is a ghost town. No one visits a brand new bare website.

Medium solves these problems. There are already people searching in Medium for the best stories, and you don’t have to spend tons of money on SEO to reach the first page of Google.

The problem is that you don’t own the rights to your articles and blogs. So, if Medium decides to turn off the platform, your future is bleak. And, you can’t put ad networks in your posts. 

No one knows what’s going to happen in the future. Perhaps there will be a platform that will let you own your content, host it, get you a domain for free, and have gazillions of users to monetize.

Then again, how will that platform make money? Who knows. 

How blog works today is vital for businesses. The eCommerce space is exploding right now due to the Covid-19 crisis.

People want stuff online more than ever, and they have questions. By creating value and answering their questions, you can potentially win their business.

Blogging is not only direct to consumers. Targeting businesses is the most lucrative method to make money with blogging. 

Whether your target is C-suites, tech companies, or consumers, you can use blogging as a tool to attract attention. 

People have been asking whether blogging worked two decades ago.

They asked the same thing a decade ago.

Others didn’t ask and started their blog and earned a significant amount of money.

Today, people are still asking whether blogging works.
