Well, that’s what I do. I blog about hobbies that make me happy for a living.

How to blog about hobbies for a living

Above is the latest paychecks I received from blogging about my hobbies.

I earned $2,043 in 4 weeks without spending on ads or promotions. Okay, take away $2.95 a month for hosting, $5 for electricity, and $29.05 for coffee beans. Yes, brewing my own coffee is another hobby of mine.

Now, that’s still a net profit of $2,000!

It’s not a big number, but it’s the honest truth. And this particular blog is only generating 7,000 pageviews a month.

If you want to work at home, be your own boss, escape the daily grind, well, it’s not too late.

If I can do it, you can do it too!

There are many blogs about hobbies.

Just google your favorite sport or game, and you’ll see a plethora of blogs about them.

Blogging about your hobby doesn’t take much brainpower. 

All you need to talk about is what you already know. 

The hard part of blogging for a living is how to make money.

But, you shouldn’t focus too much on the money for now. 

Start by finding the hobby you are most passionate about first.

1. Find your passion

Following are the questions you need to ask yourself to help you decide on what to write about:

• Are you willing to do it for free?
• Can you blog about it forever?
• Ask family and friends what you can’t shut up about.
• What’s the last thing you researched?

First of all, you need to be sure that your hobby is your passion. This is a crucial step, so don’t mess this up.

You might have plenty of hobbies, but which one will make you want to work? For free.

You know you are passionate about something when you do it and expect nothing in return.

When I was into fishing back in my late 20’s, I spent hundreds on my fishing gear and hours studying how to fish.

I loved learning how to tie a knot and how to cast further from the rocks with a 12-foot fishing rod.

I didn’t care if I caught a fish or not, it was the process of catching a fish that I loved. But, I did catch a silver bream!

Also, you have to know that you’ll be doing it for several months to a year, probably even longer until you see any kind of return on your investment.

So, pick a hobby that you know you won’t get tired of in the next six months. Otherwise, it’s back to square one.

If you are on the fence, why not ask your family and friends?

Ask them, out of all your hobbies, what are you most passionate about.

Sometimes, those close to us can tell what we love, better than ourselves.

My hobbies to blog about (Ideas list)

I have many hobbies. I still do some of them and some I don’t have time for. 

I’m sure I have more hobbies than I could recollect, but chess is the first hobby that I remember. 

My brother was good at chess. I was not, but he did get me into it.

These hobbies have the potential to make you quit your day job. But, honestly, any hobby that makes you happy can make money.

1. Chess. There are many people are into chess. But, the competition is very low. It makes sense to start your blog now.
2. Basketball. Basketball is a popular and profitable sport. But it could grow even more. It is growing in popularity overseas, which means that it could be really big in the future. What this means for you as the owner of a blog is that you can use your new blog to grow with it.
3. Boxing. Boxing is a popular sport. You can teach people how to box via written and video form. Make money from your blog and Youtube too.
4. Video games. Video games could be the lowest earner when it comes to ad revenue, but the more content you put out, the more money you’ll earn. And I know you’ll put out more content because you can play games more than 8 hours a day right?
5. Guitar. If you’re already teaching in person, a blog will garner you more students. You can also make money on YouTube by providing value.
6. Cars. Living your life a quarter mile at a time? The car scene is great to blog about and make money from.
7. Motorbikes. Living life on the edge? Provide resource on where to get a motorbike license, show tips and tricks to pass them. And, show how to maintain a bike. Ad revenue will take care of you.
8. Fitness/gym. I know this is a saturated niche. However, it’s big industry. And having just a little bit of it is big money.
9. Food. Love eating out? Blog about your experience and people will appreciate it. Plaster ads everywhere in your blog and start a YouTube channel to make more money.
10. Cooking. I love cooking. I hate prepping though. There’s money to be made in cooking, especially in the healthy cooking niche.
11. Travel. Ah, travel. I can’t wait to be sponsored by the next hotel to stay with them. You can do the same too. Travel bloggers fly and stay for free wherever they go.
12. Photography. I used to buy eBooks, visit photography sites for tips and tricks and reviews. You bet they made money off me.
13. Fishing. Same as above.
14. Videography. Videography is not as popular as photography. But, the demand for video content is high. The the industry will only grow and you’ll be the number 1 resource to go to when it booms.

We don’t travel as much due to covid-19. 

I sold my motorbike and don’t care about what I drive anymore. Cars and bikes are expensive hobbies. Especially when you keep dropping your bike.

I don’t play video games now because it’s such a big time-suck. Nor do I fish.

I still play my guitar, play basketball, box by myself, take photos, take videos, eat yum yum, and work out.

As you can see, I am spoilt for choice. Too many choices makes it hard to decide. So, how did I make a choice?

I asked my family which topic I couldn’t shut up about.

They picked health and fitness. 

Makes sense. I always tell them to eat better and exercise.

I did have an inkling towards fitness, but I was also thinking about photography and videography. 

However, getting fit and healthy for my daughter’s sake and mine is probably best.

So, I decided to write about my weight loss journey and help others by writing about what worked for me.

How about blogging as a hobby?

Is blogging a hobby?

Well, I didn’t think of blogging as a hobby. But, after blogging about health and fitness, blogging became escapism and education.

The more I wrote about health articles, the more my health knowledge expanded.

It also became an excellent outlet.

Some blogs I wrote didn’t make it online because it was just me letting out some frustrations. 

But can blogging be a hobby?

I’m going, to be honest. I started blogging so I can earn money online. That failed. I didn’t earn a single penny.

I would start a brand new blog and write a few articles only to get sick of it after a few months.

I didn’t like what I was writing about. Naturally, I’d lose interest in a short amount of time.

It’s different when I was passionate about my topic.

Even though I wasn’t bringing in money with my blogging, I didn’t care.

I was still writing about what I had for dinner, why my best friend and I had a falling out, and my lonesome travels.

Blogging is a great way to document your life, learn new skills, or inspire others.

So, can I consider blogging as a hobby?

Definitely.

Writing about blogging can be a hobby when you love writing.

You love writing so much that you can make a boring Sunday afternoon into an electrifying hour of a lifetime.

Even if you don’t find the amazingness of words and have no idea about pronouns, you’ll still love blogging when you love what you’re writing about.

2. Don’t be scared to start from square one

Okay, I used to say that I can eat KFC chicken for the rest of my life. But then I ate KFC for a week, and got sick of it.

No matter how sure we are of something, change always happens.

So, even if you blogged about a hobby for six months but realize it’s like KFC, you can change your mind.

It’s better to quit early than late. Just imagine all the time and effort you would have put more into something that you could potentially do for the rest of your life.

Moreover, if you hate it now, you’ll eventually quit anyway.

Blogging is a waiting game, a long waiting game. 

Your content can take months to show on Google. Sometimes, it won’t show at all. Even if it does appear on Google, it will probably be down to page ten.

3. Start a new hobby

What if you don’t have a hobby? Or, what if you’re not as passionate about your current hobbies?

Start a new one.

You can learn as you go. Then you can educate others on what you’ve learned.

You don’t have to be an authority on the subject matter. You can share your opinions. Express your thoughts.

Of course, you’ll be slow to push out content. But the turtle didn’t win the race because it was dead slow. It won through persistence, perseverance, and motivation.

Any hobby can make you money. Some, more so than others. However, don’t pick a niche because it’s where the money is at.

Blogging can be tedious and boring because it’s monotonous. 

You are by yourself writing day in and day out.

That’s why it’s important, vital, and essential that you LOVE what you are writing about.
